April 17, 2012 Giants 8, Phillies 3

After a 2-run single for Placido Polanco ties the score 3-all in the 5th, the Giants answer right back in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run shot for Buster Posey (real name Gerald Dempsey Posey III if you are curious), and the Jints add three more in the 7th for insurance. Melky Cabrera goes 4 for 4 - maybe he was already juiced up? :)

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Madison Bumgarner robbed Shane Victorino of a base hit.

Melky Cabrera had 4 hits at AT&T Park where the San Francisco Giants beat the
Philadelphia Phillies 8 to 3.

San Francisco jumped on top of Philadelphia in the 5th inning when they came
up with 2 runs on 2 hits. The biggest moment was provided by Buster Posey
who elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he cleared the fences for a
two-run home run. San Francisco out-hit Philadelphia for the game, 13 hits
to 9.

Madison Bumgarner(1-2) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Sergio
Romo earned his 1st save. Joe Blanton(0-1) was charged with the loss. He
surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

April 17, 2012 Rangers 10, Red Sox 0 (Colby Lewis no-hitter)

I know I didn't decide to do a Red Sox season manually this year, but I had to post this one as Rangers starter Colby Lewis holds the Sox to no hits! In fact, Lewis faced the minimum 27 batters! A leadoff walk to David Ortiz in the 5th inning breaks up the perfect game, but next batter Kevin Youkilis grounds into a doubleplay to erase the runner. The next 13 Sox are retired in order as Lewis strikes out 11 to complete the masterpiece. Meanwhile, his teammates are smoking Sox starter Jon Lester to the tune of 7 runs in only 3 innings.

For the red-hot Rangers, after losing their first game of the year they have won 10 straight to go to their present 10-1 record. That 10-1 record ties the 1989 team for the best start in team history. A win next game to go to 11-1 will set a new record. A loss to put them to 10-2 will keep them tied with 1989 for the best start. Oddly enough, the real-life 2012 team also started 10-2 on to a 13-3 start for the best overall start in team history.

Boston fans certainly got their money's worth at Fenway Park. Colby
Lewis(2-0) pitched a rare no-hitter as the smoking-hot Texas Rangers toppled
the Boston Red Sox 10 to 0.

Lewis was spectacular. He had excellent control, walking only one. The Texas
players and coaches started to leave Lewis alone with his thoughts after the
game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you
could hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion
after every out. Lewis racked up 11 strikeouts. Texas managed 17 hits in
their victory.

Jon Lester(0-2) was the loser. He was unable to control the Texas offense and
allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings.

'You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than this
happening,' said Lewis, 'I don't expect it to sink in for awhile,' he said.
'I'm numb right now, I'm overwhelmed.'

April 16, 2012 Phillies 2, Giants 0

A 1st inning bases loaded walk to Laynce Nix to force a runner home proves to be enough for the Phillies, as a Palcido Polanco solo homerun in the 7th ices the cake. Roy Halladay continues the impressive beginning of the season, throwing 8 shutout innings. Gave Paps another chance today, and comes through for the save. The struggling Tim Linecum gets the loss despite only allowing one run. Linecum does drop to 0-3, but his ERA went down about 10 1/2 runs.

Regarding the two starters, Halladay and Linecum, they are going in two opposite directions. Through three starts each:
Halladay 3-0, 0.38 ERA (one earned run in 24 innings)
Linecum 0-3, 11.12 ERA (14 ER in 11 1/3 innings)

Placido Polanco hit a homerun and Roy Halladay went 8 strong innings as the
Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Francisco Giants 2 to 0 at AT&T
Park.

Philadelphia took the lead off Tim Lincecum in the first inning plating one
baserunner. Juan Pierre drew a walk. Polanco came next and he singled.
Jimmy Rollins was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Hunter Pence
stepped in and he drew a walk to load the bases. After another out, Laynce
Nix came to bat and drew a walk. That early run support was enough for
Halladay(3-0) and Philadelphia. San Francisco threatened in the 9th but
Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.

Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his 2nd save. Lincecum(0-3) was hit with
the loss. He allowed 4 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.

April 15, 2012 Phillies 3, Mets 2 (10)

It doesn't look good when David Wright of the Mets rips one over the wall with two out in the top of the 10th to give the Mets the lead, but the Phillies load the bases in their half of the 10th with a Carlos Ruiz double, his thrid hit of the game, knocking home the tying and winning runs as the Phils take two of three from the Mets. Up next, a trip out west and a 10 game road trip to San Francisco, San Diego, and Phoenix the longest road trip of the season. 16 of the next 20 games are on the road.

Catcher Carlos Ruiz had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
topped the New York (NL) Mets in 10 innings by a score of 3 to 2 at Citizens
Bank Park.

Both teams had scored 1 runs after nine full innings. Philadelphia came out on
top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Hunter Pence was the
sparkplug when he drew a walk. Placido Polanco stepped up next and he was
hit by a pitch. Jim Thome then ripped a single to load the bases. Ruiz
stepped in and he doubled making Philadelphia victorious to the delight of
the the home town crowd. Philadelphia ended up with 12 hits for the game
while New York (NL) had 9.

The win went to Chad Qualls(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings. Frank
Francisco(0-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 1/3
of an inning.

April 14, 2012 Mets 5, Phillies 3

A 3-0 Phillies lead through 7 goes quickly south when Vance Worley's day was done. Worley pitched shutout ball through those 7 innings, but walking four had him over the 100 pitch mark. Rather than try to go two more innings out of him for the shutout, I decided to bring in reliever Joe Savery for the 8th. Bad move, as David Wright smokes a 2-run homer off of him and the first two runs for the Mets.

Still with a 3-2 lead entering the 9th, normally reliable Jonathan Papelbon comes in from the 'pen. Not dependable today though. as first batter Jason Bay is walked, promptly followed by Lucas Duda smoking one over the wall for two runs and a 4-3 Mets lead. Another insurance run scores for the Mets on Papelbon's watch, as he allows three runs in 2/3 of an inning and his second blown save in three games. The Phillies do get the first two runners on and the winning run to the plate with nobody out in the bottom of the 9th, bu three quick outs squelch any chance of a comeback.

Bot 8th: Kirk Nieuwenhuis robbed Ty Wigginton of a Homerun!

In a thriller the New York (NL) Mets staged a dramatic comeback then held on
to win over the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 5 to 3 at Citizens Bank
Park.

New York (NL) scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 3 runs on 4
hits. Jason Bay led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Lucas Duda
came to the plate and bombed a two-run dinger. Kirk Nieuwenhuis then stroked
a base-hit. Josh Thole followed and he grounded into a double play. Scott
Hairston came up to bat and doubled. Ruben Tejada contributed to the rally
and lined a single. Ronny Cedeno stepped into the batter's box and he drew a
walk. David Wright got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on
strikes. New York (NL) rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.

Manny Acosta(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Acosta was
helped out by Bobby Parnell who recorded his 2nd save. Jonathan
Papelbon(1-1) suffered the loss in relief.

'The only way this one could have been better', said Acosta, 'was if we had
played it at home.'

April 13, 2012 Mets 3, Phillies 1

Try as they might, the Phils can't muster much against Mets starter and Cy Young Award winner R. A. Dickey, only managing two hits and a run off him (a Jimmy Rollins solo homerun) in eight innings. They do make some noise in the home half of the 9th by loading the bases with two outs against Frank Francisco, but catcher Carlos Ruiz grounds out to end the game.

The man behind the plate for the Mets, Josh Thole, outhits the Phillies team by himself with a perfect 4 for 4 day.

April 12, 2012 Phillies 6, Marlins 5 (11)

Definitely one of the more exciting games. So much happened that rather than try to explain it all I put the play account after the box score and will just give some of the highlights.

It took into the 50th inning of play, but the Phillies finally went deep with Carlos Ruiz clearing the fence for the solo homerun in the 7th inning which at the time gave the Phils a 4-3 lead. Another run scored in that same 7th and both were well needed, as two Marlins homeruns in the 8th and 9th tie the game. The big blow was John Buck's solo shot to lead off the 9th off of Jonathan Papelbon which tied the game and sent it into extra innings. The Phillies finally come across victorious in the bottom of the 11th with a Shane Victorino bases loaded walk after pinch-hitter Pete Orr was walked to load the bases and set up the doubnle play that never came. The win complete the series sweep of the Fish snd puts the Phils to the 5-1 mark which is actually 1/2 game back of the 6-1 Nationals in the division.

April 11, 2012 Phillies 9, Marlins 0

Season highs in runs and hits, combined with Roy Halladay's pitching give the Phils an easy time of it today, and up their record on the young season so far to 4-1. Interestingly enough, even with seven extra base hits today the Phils are still without a homerun on offense. Only them and the Padres have failed to go deep so far this season.

Speaking of won-loss records, everybody now has at least one win and/or one loss except for the 5-0 Detroit Tigers. Despite the Phillies current record of 4-1, they sit behind the 5-1 Nationals in the NL East.

RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies bested the Miami Fins 9 to 0 at Citizens
Bank Park.

Philadelphia claimed the early lead in the first inning when they came up with
2 runs on 3 hits. That early scoring was all that Halladay(2-0) needed.
Philadelphia managed 13 hits in their victory.

Josh Johnson(0-2) absorbed the loss. Philadelphia scored big getting 6 runs
off him in 5 innings.

April 9, 2012 Phillies 3, Marlins 1 (Phillies home opener)

In the home opener, the Phils go on cruise control and lead throughout in a game that was not as close as the final score indicates. Cole Hamels was smoking right along, pitching shutout, 3 hit ball until two were out in the bottom of the 9th. Needing one more out for the shutout, that final out never came as the Marlins came alive with a single for Gaby Sanchez, a double for former National Austin Kearns and former Phillie Greg Dobbs knocks a runner home with a single. That spells an end to Hamels' day, and Jonathan Papelbon strikes out next batter Omar Infante to preserve the win.

April 8, 2012 Pirates 7, Phillies 0

Pittsburgh starter James McDonald pitches his first career shutout, holding the Phillies hitless until Laynce Nix hits a pinch-hit double with one out in the 6th inning. It doesn't faze McDonald a bit though as that is the only hit he allows, plus helps himself out a bit at the plate by knocking home a run. Jim Thome makes the start at first base for the Phillies, the first start in the field for him since 2007 as he returns to Philly after an almost 10 year absence. Thome is just about old enough to be starter Vance Worley's father with a 17 year age difference between the two.

James McDonald took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates
bested the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 0 at PNC Park.

McDonald(1-0) was virtually untouchable. He allowed only 1 hit and 2 walks in
9 innings. The right-handed McDonald lost his no-hit bid when Laynce Nix
doubled with one out in the 6th inning. Pittsburgh had a total of 10 hits
for the game.

Vance Worley(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in
5 innings. 'When McDonald is on like that it is a tough game to play, no
doubt about it,' Charlie Manuel said. 'He always pitches well against us.'

Jimmy Rollins ties the game 2-all with a 2-run double in the 6th, and then Pete Orr gets a 2-run double of his own in the top of the 9th after the first two batters get out and then two straight teammates were hit by a pitch. Jonathan Papelbon gets into his first game for his new team in a non-save situation in the 7th inning and gets the win by being in the right place at the right time.

The Philadelphia Phillies came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil
the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 4 to
