June 8, 2012 Orioles 4, Phillies 3

Try as they might, the Phillies can't overcome an early 4-0 defecit and fall short by a run. They don'ty go down without a fight as they get a run in the 9th, and have the tying run thrown out at home for the final out of the game. Orioles started Jake Arrieta, tied with teammate Brian Matusz for the league lead in losses with 8, doesn't break that tie and gets a win. Joe Blanton of the Phils allows the four runs and gets the loss, though only one of the runs was earned due to three errors behind him.

Chris Davis connected with a 'big fly' as the Baltimore Orioles outscored the
Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 3.

Jake Arrieta(3-8) gave Baltimore a solid outing. He allowed 8 hits and no
walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Arrieta struckout 6 Philadelphia batters.
Philadelphia made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

Jim Johnson got the save, his 13th. Joe Blanton(2-5) was tagged with the
loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 8 hits and no walks.

'You have to give Philadelphia credit, they fought us tough to the end' Buck
Showalter said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out
the victory.'

June 7, 2012 Phillies 2, Dodgers 0

Cole Hamels tosses his 2nd shutout for the season, and also sets a season high in whiffs by striking out 11 Dodgers. Dodger starter AAron Harang is the hard-luck loser, as he did allow both runs but both were unearned! Hamels' 1.81 ERA puts him 4th in the majors in that department.

The Phillies hit the road next for the big chunk of their interleague play with series in Baltimore, Minnesota and Toronto before coming back home to face Tampa Bay. Three of those teams are no strangers to the Phils at all, as they have played them numerous times ion the interleague plus the World Series (losing to Baltimore in 1983, Toronto in 1993 and beating Tampa Bay in 2008), but they have not played the Twins very often. The Twins (or their previous incarnation the Washington Senators) have never been played in the World Series and have only been played in the interleague three other times. This will be the Phillies first trip to Minnesota since 2004.

June 6, 2012 Dodgers 6, Phillies 4

Two starting pitchers going in totally different directions get the decision today. Chris Capuano gets the win for the Dodgers, upping his record to 8-1 to give him the best winning percentage in the major leagues and tie him for the most wins in the majors with teammate Clayton Kershaw (8-2) and Justin Verlander of the Tigers (8-2). Kyle Kendrick of the Phillies ends up on the losing end, dropping to 1-7 and now in an 8-way tie for the second most losses in the majors. The most is 8 by three pitchers, Jake Arrieta of Baltimore (2-8), Clayton Richard of San Diego (2-8) and Tim Linecum of the Giants (also 2-8).

As far as I can tell, Kendrick's winning percentage of .125 (1-7) ties him with two other pitchers for the worst percentage for a starter. Juan Nicasio of Colorado and Carl Pavano of Minnesota also sit at 1-7 for the .125 percentage.

In a two run game the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers got by the Philadelphia Phillies
by the score of 6 to 4.

Chris Capuano(8-1) had a fairly solid outing. He allowed 9 hits and no walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings. Los Angeles(NL) had a total of 12 hits for the game.

Kenley Jansen preserved the game for Capuano, recording his his 13th save.
Kyle Kendrick(1-7) was the losing pitcher. He was unable to control the Los
Angeles(NL) offense and allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

'He gutted it out' Don Mattingly said of Capuano. 'I was very impressed by
his tenacity.'

June 5, 2012 Phillies 3, Dodgers 2

Cliff Lee strikes out 10 and almost goes the distance, but after allowing a baserunner in the 9tyh gives way to Jonathan Papelbon. Paps allows that runner to score, but get former Phillie Bobby Abreu to ground into a doubleplay to end the game. The Phils win the game despite being outhit, 10-8.

The juniors ran rampant for the Dodgers today, with Ivan Dejesus Jr. coming in to pinch-run in the 9th whose father is of course Ivan DeJesus who spent time with the Phillies back in the mid 1980s. Tony Gwynn Jr. also started for the Dodgers and has two hits in the game (son of obviously the great Tony Gwynn) and Jerry Hairston Jr. also started for L.A. (son of obviously Jerry Hairston, and brother of Scott Hairston).

Hunter Pence had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Cliff Lee whiffed 10 batters as the
Philadelphia Phillies outscored the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers 3 to 2.

Lee(3-2) delivered a fine performance for Philadelphia. He was reached for 9
hits and 1 walk in 8 and 1/3 innings. Los Angeles(NL) had a chance in the
9th but they came up short.

Lee was helped out by Jonathan Papelbon who recorded his 12th save. The loss
was charged to Chad Billingsley(3-7). Charlie Manuel was asked about the
performance of Lee, 'He had his good stuff out there tonight. The fans
really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to
give him even more adrenalin.'

June 4, 2012 Dodgers 7, Phillies 2

To begin a 4 game series in their only trip to Philadelphia this year, the Dodgers have no trouble dispatching the Phillies today. The Phils really only have pitcher Vance Worley to blame. Worley, in his first start in almost a month after a stint on the DL, totally becomes unglued in the 6th inning. With two outs in the inning and trailing 2-0, Worley falls apart by allowing a single and three straight walks. The third walk, to opposing pitcher Clayton Kershaw, knocks a runner home. He struck out the final batter of that 6th, but then it gets worse. Worley begtins the 7th with a single (runner caught stealing), then a single, double, and intentional walk to load the bases. That brings in pitcher Chad Qualls, and his first pitch is ripped over the fence by A. J. Ellis for a grand slam homerun and puts the game out of reach. Six total runs charged to Worley, and Ellis has a 4 for 4 day while knocking in 5 runs.

IRL, the Dodgers swept this four game series. For the Dodgers, it was their first series sweep in Philadelphia since a 3 game sweep in 1997, and the first four game sweep of the Phillies in Philly in almost 70 years, since 1946. They did sweep the Phils in a four game series in LA back in 2008.

Catcher A.J. Ellis had 4 hits as the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers bested the
Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 2 at Citizens Bank Park.

Ellis enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He slapped a base-hit in the 2nd
inning, singled which plated a run in the 4th inning, laced a single in the
6th inning and cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 7th inning.
Los Angeles(NL) rapped out 11 hits for the night.

Clayton Kershaw(8-2) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 5 and 2/3
innings. Vance Worley(1-3) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 6 runs in
6 and 1/3 innings and saw his ERA increase from 3.60 to 4.27.

May 2, 2012 Phillies 5, Marlins 4

Almost a hard-luck loss for the Phils as they oouthit Miami all game, but trail by a run 4-3 when Brian Schneider plays hero with a pinch-hit 2-run homerun in the 7th inning for what proves to be the winner. The Phils outhit Miami 12-5 for the game, and the Phils leave 13 men on base compared to only 2 for the Marlins.

Phillie pinch-hitters have fared rather well for the year so far, with a .236 average (17 for 72) and 3 pinch-hit homeruns. Even the pitchers have done pretty good with the bat, overall batting .207 (24 for 116) and one homerun, that one by Cole Hamels.

One run was the difference at Citizens Bank Park as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Miami Fins 5 to 4.

Raul Valdes(4-0) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He didn't
allow much, just 1 hit and no walks in 1 inning. Miami made it exciting in
the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Valdes got help from Jonathan Papelbon who earned his 11th save. Steve
Cishek(4-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. Ozzie Guillen was in a sour
mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know why we lost
this game. We made too many mistakes.'

Mark Buehrle proves that what happens in real life can sometimes translate well to SOM play. He has thrown two no-hitters in his career, one in 2007 and a perfect game in 2009. He had a chance today, retiring the first 21 Phillie batters to face him until Carlos Ruiz breaks up the no-no bid when he leads off the 8th inning with a clean single to become the first bnaserunner of the game. Jimmy Rollins is the only other Phillie runner of the game with a two-out double in the bottom of the 9th off of Buerhle's replacement, Ryan Webb. Buerhle and Webb combine on the shutout.

Mark Buehrle carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning and right fielder
Giancarlo Stanton slammed a homerun at Citizens Bank Park where the Miami
Fins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6 to 0.

Buehrle(5-3) escaped virtually unscathed against the Philadelphia hitters. He
was stingy on the mound, allowing just 1 hit and no walks in 8 innings
lowering his ERA to 3.66. The left-handed Buehrle lost his chance for a
no-hitter when Carlos Ruiz singled with nobody out in the 8th inning. Miami
finished with 8 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 2.

Kyle Kendrick(1-6) suffered the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits
and 3 walks.

June 1, 2012 Blue Jays 15, Red Sox 2

Toronto felxes the muscle as the Red Sox tie a team record and pitcher Clay Buchholz ties a major league record in the process. For Buchholz, he allows 9 runs to the Jays with six of those being homeruns. Those six homeruns allowed puts him into a tie with eight other pitchers for the all-time major league record for homeruns allowed by a pitcher in a game. The Sox as a team allowed seven homers, which ties three other games for the most homers allowed in a game in team history.

Those other three games were a 12-3 loss in 1961 to the Yankees (both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris homered twice in the game), a 12-8 loss to the Orioles in 1967 (the Orioles hit four of those homeruns in just one inning), and an 11-9 victory over the Tigers in a game in 2004. Not bad to allow seven homeruns and win the game! That game, incidentaly, is tied with a game in 1995 for the major league record for the most homeruns hit for a losing team in major league history.

It was almost eight homeruns allowed (which would have set a team record), but Scott Podsenick robbed a homerun from Jose Bautista in the 3rd inning as the web gems will tell you. BTW, the major league record for most homeruns allowed in a game is 10, which Baltimore allowed to Toronto in an 18-3 Blue Jays win back in 1987. The Phillies hold the NL record by allowing 9 homeruns to the Cincinnati Reds in a 22-3 thrashing in 1999.

Yunel Escobar had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Rogers Centre as the Toronto Blue Jays
embarrassed the Boston Red Sox by the lopsided score of 15 to 2.

Escobar had a good evening at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out of the
park in the 1st inning, delivered a one-base hit in the 4th inning, doubled
bringing in a run in the 5th inning and doubled which scored a run in the 7th
inning. Toronto lit up the scoreboard in the 4th inning which saw them plate
6 runs on 6 hits. The Toronto offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9
innings.

The win went to Henderson Alvarez(5-5) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. Clay
Buchholz(5-4) was hit with the loss. He allowed 6 homeruns in 3 and 1/3
innings of work.

For Toronto the victory was a welcome one, indeed. They had been struggling
in their last ten games with a disappointing 2-8 record. With the loss
Boston now has a record of 26-26.

Most teams are around where they actually were at this point of the season, give or take a few games, with a few notable exceptions. The Arizona Diamondbacks, who in reality at this time were a sub-.500 team, currently have the best record in the National League, 10 games better than they were IRL, and their best start to a season in team history. The Texas Rangers are also off to their best start in team history, and have the best record in the major leagues. The Baltimore Orioles, tied for the division lead IRL at this point, sit last in the division with one of the worst records in baseball and 9 games worse than IRL.

Despite the Phillies finally overtaking the Nationals for first place in the NL East, their won-loss record is 5th worst of the six division leaders. Were the Phils in the AL West, where the best in baseball Texas Rangers reside, they would be 6 1/2 games out of first place!
