May 22, 2012 Phillies 3, Nationals 2

The Nationals score two runs right out of the gate, but the Phils save the best for last. Placido Polanco goes 4 for 5 with two doubles and a homer, as his solo homerun in the 8th ties the game and he rips a double in the bottom of the 9th which scores John Mayberry Jr. all the way from first base to give the Phils the walk-off win.

Placido Polanco had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies won a
heart-stopping victory over the Washington Nationals, 3 to 2.

Philadelphia scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After
an out was recorded, John Mayberry Jr stroked a base-hit. One out later,
Polanco came to bat and doubled resulting in an exciting win for Philadelphia
and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Philadelphia
finished with 12 hits while Washington ended up with 8.

Jose Contreras(2-2) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory.
Sean Burnett(2-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2
hits in 2/3 of an inning.

May 21, 2012 Nationals 5, Phillies 3

A career high 7 walks for Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez, but the Nats give him more than enough support as the Phillies trail throughout. A 4-run 3rd inning is the backbreaker, highlighted by a 2-run through-the-drawn-in-infield single for Bryce Harper and a 2-run homerun later in the inning for Ian Desmond. It all knocks Kyle Kendrick down to a dismal 1-4, 7.24 ERA.

Three of the top five pitchers in National League ERA will pitch in this series with Gonzalez today (now 5th with a 1.90), Roy Halladay for the Phils next game (4th at 1.75) and then the Phillies' Cole Hamels the game after that (leads the league at 1.35). The other two in ERA are Stephen Strasburg of the Nats (2nd at 1.65) and Johnny Cuerto of the Reds (3rd at 1.73).

In a two run game the Washington Nationals scored 4 runs in the 3rd inning and
got by the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 5 to 3.

Philadelphia found themselves trailing quickly as the Washington bats came
through in the first inning plating one baserunner on 2 hits. Washington
ended up with 8 hits for the game while Philadelphia had 5.

The winning pitcher was Gio Gonzalez(7-2) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings.
Gonzalez got help from Sean Burnett who earned his 3rd save. Kyle
Kendrick(1-4) took the loss. Washington knocked him around a bit, as he gave
up 5 runs in 4 innings.

Washington continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division
leading 26-16. They are 9-1 in their last ten games. With the loss, the
Philadelphia ballclub's record is 24-19.

May 20, 2012 Phillies 9, Red Sox 1

All Phillies today with Brian Schneider providing most of the gusto as he smokes a 2-run homerun, an RBI double and beats out a double play grounder which also drives in a run. Cliff Lee finally gets rewarded for pitching well as he gets his first win of the year and he, Jose Contreras and Raul Valdez almost combine on a shutout. The shutout is broken at the last minute, as David Ortiz bombs one over the wall with two out in the 9th. The run bore no difference in the game, but like i said did break the shutout.

Next on the schedule - the battle for the division lead with the Washington Nationals. The Nats did have their winning streak snapped, and currently sit a game and a half ahead of the Phillies. The Phils couldn't capitalize in the last series with the Nats, maybe the hometown fans will make a difference this time. Including the next series, it will make 14 of 16 games in Philly. Quite a schedule in a 36 game stretch - 16 of 20 games on the road, including a season long 10 game road trip, followed immediately with 14 of 16 games at home.

May 19, 2012 Phillies 8, Red Sox 5

The balls fly out of the park today with seven homeruns hit between the two teams. The game can pretty much be seperated in half - the first four innings all Phils and all Sox after that. The Phillies jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four innings, with homeruns by Ty Wigginton and Freddy Galvis helping a five run 3rd inning which knocked Sox starter Jon Lester out in the 3rd. Two more runs in the 4th to up the lead to 8-0 when Hunter Pence rips a 2-run shot off of former Phillie Vicente Padilla.

Then, the Sox take control with a David Ortiz solo homer and a 2-run job for Jarrod Saltalamacchia giving them three runs. Two more Sox homers in the 9th when Ortiz goes long again and Will Middlebrooks joins the homer club. Two of the homers off of starter Joe Blanton (who gets his first win of the year) and two in the 9th off of a so far this year ineffective Chad Qualls, as evidenced by Qualls' ERA of 9.31. Basically, the Phils were up 8-0 after four and the Sox outscored the Phils the remainder of the game 5-0.

May 17, 2012 Phillies4, Cubs 3 (11)

Ty Wiggington and Carlos Ruiz each homered in the first four innings, but all it did was put the game into a 3-all tie. It would stay that way until the 11th, when Ruiz goes deep again for his second homerun of the game to put the Phils ahead. JonathanPapelbon put the first two batters on in the bottom of the 11th, but then bore down and struck out the next three for the save.

Next on the schedule are two of the three most awesome teams of all time - a three game series against the Red Sox and a three gamer against the Nationals, both series in Philly.

Carlos Ruiz knocked 2 homeruns as the Philadelphia Phillies outscored the
Chicago (NL) Cubs in 11 innings 4 to 3.

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Philadelphia won the game in
the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Ruiz smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly'. Ty Wigginton came next and he laced a base-hit. Philadelphia had
9 hits for the night.

Raul Valdes(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Jonathan
Papelbon got the save, his 9th. Blake Parker(0-1) ended up with the loss in
relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk.

May 17, 2012 Marlins 10, Braves 7

This game didn't involve the Phillies, but worth mentioning anyway. Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton singlehandedly betters the Braves total of seven runs by driving in 8 teammates! Well only five teammates, since he drove himself in three times with three homeruns! Two 3-run blasts and a 2-run job. While maybe not quite the record 4 HR and 12 RBI of Mark Whiten back in 1993, impressive nonetheless.

Believe it or not, this isn't the first game this month that Stanton has hit three homeruns in a game. He also blasted three dingers 10 days ago against the Astros. On that same date, May 7th, Jason Kubel of Arizona hit three homers against St. Louis. And that isn't all. On May 2nd, A. J. Pierzynski of the White Sox hit three homers against the Indians, Edwin Encarnacion of Toronto hit three against the Twins on May 10th (in three atbats!), and on May 12th Brandon Guyer of Tampa went deep three times against the Orioles.

All told, six different times just this month a player has hit three homeruns in one game. And there is still two more weeks left in the month!

May 16, 2012 Phillies 6, Cubs 1

A short two game road trip to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field doesn't bode freindly for the home Cubs. Starlin Castro of the Cubs did rip a homerun in the 6th inning to ruin Kyle Kendrick's bid for a shutout, but the Phillies already led 6-0 by that point and win by the easy 6-1 margin giving Kendrick his first win of the year. 12 hits for the Phillies, who go double digits in hits for the fourth time in the last five games.

At Wrigley Field the Chicago (NL) Cubs were battered 6 to 1 by the
Philadelphia Phillies.

Philadelphia took the lead off Matt Garza in the first inning plating 2 runs
on 2 base hits. Jimmy Rollins led off the inning for Philadelphia when he
drew a walk. Juan Pierre followed next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Shane Victorino then banged out a single. Victorino took second on the
throw. Hunter Pence followed and he doubled. That early run support was
enough for Kyle Kendrick(1-3) and Philadelphia. Chicago (NL) was out-hit by
Philadelphia, 12 hits to 6.

Garza(3-3) was the losing pitcher. Philadelphia knocked him around a bit, as
he gave up 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings.

May 15, 2010 Phillies 5, Astros 4

The Cardiac Kids do it again as Brian Schneider blasts a solo shot over the wall with two out in the 10th for the walk-off win. Third time in a week that the Phillies have won the game in their last atbat, and an extra inning games for the second consecutive game. The tie was made when Mike Fontenot ripped a pinch hit RBI single in the boittom of the 8th to tie the game.

On another note, the top three men in the Phillies order today of Jimmy Rollins, Juan Pierre and Shane Victorino run tops in the NL in stolen bases. Pierre stole a base today for his 11th and ties him for second place, Victorino's total of 10 puts him third, and Rollins is no slouch with 7 steals. Between the three, the total of 28 steals is more than the totals of all but seven teams (not including the Phillies) in the major leagues, and the team total of 32 is third overall in the majors.

May 14, 2012 Astros 1, Phillies 0 (10)

One of the more painful games - only allow one run and lose it. Scoreless through the regulation nine, former Sox sparkplug and Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie gets the first (and only) run of the game when he takes the first pitch from Jose Contreras downtown leading off the 10th inning. Former Phillie pitcher Brett Myers takes the 10th for Houston and retires his former team 1-2-3 for his first save since 2007 and closes the four man combined shutout.

May 13, 2012 Phillies 7, Padres 0

Two Phillies are responsible for all of the offense today: Juan Pierre and Ty Wiggington. Pierre knocks home three teammates with a 2-run triple in the 3rd and an RBI single in the 5th, while Wiggington drives in four all on one shot, a grand slam homerun in the 5th inning. It all gives Cole Hamels an easy time of it, and to top it off Hamels scores a run and throws a 5-hit shutout.

With Roy Halladay's less than stellar performance last game along with the shutout for Hamels today, that changes the top ERAs in the league a bit. Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals now leads at 1.29 followed by Hamels at 1.36, Gio Gonzalez of the Nats at 1.50, and Halladay at 1.65. Halladay and Hamels do run 1-2 in total innings pitched in the NL with 60 and 53 respectively.

3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies outscored the San Diego Padres 7 to
0.

Hamels(5-1) was on top of his game. He allowed only 5 hits and 2 walks in 9

afternoon.

Jeff Suppan(1-2) suffered the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 5
runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

May 12, 2012 Padres 8, Phillies 6

It was almost a good major league debut for Phillie pitcher Jake Diekman. He came into the game in a 4-4 tie to pitch the 7th inning, retiring the Padres with ease. Teammate Shane Victorino put the Phils in front 6-4 in the bottom of the 7th with a 2-run homer, putting Diekman in line for the win. Diekman allows a run in the 8th, but Chad Qualls is the goat allowing the other three of the Pads runs in the inning and getting the loss, taking the win away from Diekman.

Yonder Alonso went yard and had 2 RBI as the San Diego Padres beat the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 8 to 6.

San Diego had the winning rally in the 8th inning scoring 4 runners on 5 hits.
The critical plate appearance was by Cameron Maybin who quieted the crowd
when he smashed a two-run homer. The Philadelphia batters didn't put up a
fight in the bottom of the 9th.

Miles Mikolas(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Mikolas was helped out by Dale Thayer who recorded his 1st
save. Chad Qualls(2-1) was the loser in relief.

With this win, San Diego has a 11-23 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With
this loss, Philadelphia has a 4-6 record of late, 18-16 overall.

May 12, 2012 Royals 7, White Sox 6 (18)

In the longest SOM game so far this year, over 5 hours are needed for a 5-5 tie after the regulation 9 to end nine innings later. Both teams scored in the 13th inning, and Royals catcher Brayan Pena goes long in the top of the 18th for the lead that holds up. To show how long the game was, Pena came into the game on defense in the 7th inning and played more than one full normal game!
