April 28, 2012 Cubs 6, Phillies 5 (12)

One of the crazier games in memory. The Cubs score three times in the 8th to take a 3 run lead and make it look like a lost cause, but the Phillies come backs coring once in the 8th and twice in the 9th with the tying run coming home on a successful suicide squeeze bunt by Juan Pierre. Pierre would later play the goat though, when he is thrown out at home trying to score the winning run in the bottom of the 11th. The Cubs put one across in the top of the 12th, and Cubs pitcher James Russel strikes out the side in the bottom of the 12th.

AThere were a slew of pinch-hitters and defensive substitutions, so ater the regulation nine neither team had anybody left on the bench for pinch-hitting duties. Cubs pitcher Scott Maine batted for himself, but I elected to pinch-hit pitcher David Herndon with Cole Hamels with a runner on base. Hamels is a somehat decent hitter, so that was really the only choice that I had. It didn't work though as Hamels struck out. The only Phillies reliever not to appear in the game was Jonathan Papelbon.

Play account follows the box score in the blog.

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Pete Orr robbed Bryan Lahair of a base hit.

Starlin Castro hit a homerun and had 2 RBI at Citizens Bank Park as the
Chicago (NL) Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies in 12 innings by the count
of 6 to 5.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Chicago (NL) ended up winning
it in the 12th inning. After two outs Alfonso Soriano doubled. Joe Mather

Reed Johnson then was hit by a pitch. Welington Castillo struck out, unable
to help the rally. Chicago (NL) rapped out 10 hits for the night.

The winning pitcher was Scott Maine(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3
