May 1, 2012 Phillies 2, Braves 0

During the 2011 season the Atlanta Braves surpassed both the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs in total games played all-time against the Phillies, mainly by being in the same division as the Phillies for almost 20 years now. This game marks the 2044th game in the Phillies-Braves series all-time, which the Phils win in a pitching duel. Cole Hamels pitched masterful until tiring a bit in the 8th, walking a couple and having the tying run on base. Michael Schwimmer enticines a double-play grounder to the next batter to end the threat and the inning, and Jonathan Papelbon goes a 1-2-3 9th for his 7th save in the combined shutout.

I say the Braves franchise, as that combines Atlanta, Milwaukee and Boston for the 2044 games. In one city, the distinction belongs to the Cubs, whose just played a four game series against the Phillies to put that total to 2039, just ahead of the Cardinals total of 2037. The Cardinals and Cubs, as I am sure you recall, were divisional opponents of the Phillies in the NL East from the creation of the division in 1969 until the divisional realignment for 1994. That brought the Braves to the NL East after being in the NL West, and the Cards and Cubs left to form the NL Central.

Cole Hamels(3-1) and Brandon Beachy(3-2) treated the Atlanta fans to a fine
pitching duel at Turner Field. The Philadelphia Phillies eventually emerged
as victors over the Atlanta Braves by the score of 2 to 0.

Philadelphia drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
scoring one runner on 2 base hits. That scoring would be all that was
needed. For the game Philadelphia out-hit Atlanta 6 to 3.

Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his 7th save.
