April 23, 2012 Diamondbacks 4, Phillies 2

The Phillies were never really in this game from the get-go as D-Backs catcher Miguel Montero smoked a 2-run homerun in the first inning. Sure the Phils did tie the game in the 3rd, but that tie was made short work of when Justin Upton knocks one out of the park to put Arizona ahead for good. J. J. Putz puts the Phils down quietly in the 9th for his major league leading 7th save, unscored upon so far this season in 10 innings of work. Despite the rather close 4-2 score, the game just never really seemed that close.

The Minnesota Twin enter some rarified air when the Red Sox beat them 7-6. That marks the 15th straight loss for the Twins, one of the longest losing streaks in the last 40 years. There have been longer in recent times though, as back in 2011 the Mariners lost 17 in a row and in 2005 the Royals had a 19 game losing streak. The overall record is held by the Phillies, when they lost 23 straight games in 1961. The Twins will have to lose six more however to tie the AL record, held by the 1988 Baltimore Orioles with a 21 game losing streak when they started the season at 0-21.

The Red Sox, as you may know, hold the record for most consecutive playoff games lost at 13. They would be the final two games in the 1986 World Series, four game sweeps to the Oakland A's in both 1988 and 1990, and a three game sweep to the Cleveland Indians in the 1993 LDS. That streak was finally broken when the Sox won game 1 of the 1998 LDS over the Indians, but then lost three straight to lose the series. But what you may not know is that the Twins run a close second to the Sox with a 12 game playoff losing streak, and the Twins streak is still ongoing. They lost all four series in the LCS, losing three straight games (after winning game one) in 2004 to the Yankees, and three game sweeps in 2006 (to Oakland), 2009 (Yankees again), and 2010 (Yankees yet again). The Twins can either tie or break the record the next time they make the playoffs.

The Arizona Diamondbacks got by the Philadelphia Phillies at Chase Field. The
final score was 4 to 2.

Arizona jumped on top of Philadelphia in the 3rd inning scoring a single run.
After two outs Justin Upton delivered a solo blast. That was all the runs
Wade Miley(1-0) needed. Miley got help from J.J. Putz who pitched a perfect
ninth and was credited with his 7th save.

Kyle Kendrick(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 11 hits and no walks in
6 and 2/3 innings.
