| Ty Wigginston's 0 for 20 season beginning slump gets broken with a 2-run 2nd inning homerun, which is negated by a 2-run double in the 7th for Ryan Theriot. A very interesting bottom of the 9th for the Giants goes groundout, single, stolen base, intentional walk, double steal, and another intentional walk to load the bases and set up the doubleplay and bring Dan Otero, the pitcher, to the plate. Since Otero had already pitched three innings in relief (and had already batted once earlier), i thought for sure he would be pinch-hit for. To my surprise he bats instead, and strikes out. The next batter lines out to end the inning with the 2-2 tie. In the top of the 10th, the Phillies make Otero pay on a single, pop up on a sac bunt attempt, a sucessful sac bunt and a Jimmy Rollins single knocking home the runner for the 3-2 lead. Papelbon takes the bottom of the 10th for save number three. In other news, the Texas Rangers win again, 5-4 over the Red Sox, for their 11th straight win and to go to 11-1. That is now the best start in team history, beating the previous best of 10-2 in 1989. Going the opposite direction is the Minnesota Twins. The Twins lost their 10th straight game to fall to 2-10, their worst start since they moved to Minnesota in 1961. The worst start in franchice history was way back in 1904 back in Washington, starting 0-11. For the Twins, their previous worst start in Minnesota was 3-9, most recently done in 1991. That bad start didn't last, as don't forget that year the Twins won the AL pennant and went on to beat the Braves in the World Series. |
