May 25, 2012 Cardinals 3, Phillies 1

A managerial decision that I DID NOT make came back to bite me in the ass in the end. Entering the bottom of the 9th, the Phillies lead the game 1-0 and Cliff Lee still in fine shape with 12 strikeouts to that point., So, I elected to leave Lee in the game to try for the complete game shutout, especially afterwhat happened last game when Papelbon blew it in the bottom of the 9th. Lee allows a single to the first batter then a popup. Pinch-hitter Steven Hill rips one to the outfield, but not quite deep enough and runner Adron Chambers (who pinch-ran for Freese) stopped at third. Now, the tyinf run is at third and the winning run is a second with one out.

Getting a bit scared, I elect to bring in Paps for another chance. With first base open, what I should have done was intentionally walked the next batter, which was Shane Robinson, to set up the possible game-ending doubleplay. Instead, I have Paps pitch to Robninson and what does he do - he gets a hold of one and blasts it over the wall for the 3-run homerun and a walk-off win for the Cardinals for the second game in a row. The runners on base were the eventual deciding runs, so even though Papelbon gets a blown save for the second straight game and is on the mound when the game is decided Lee gets the loss since the two runners on base actually decided the game and they were his responsibility.

With the hometown crowd on the edge of their seats, St. Louis Cardinals came
from behind to top Philadelphia Phillies, 3 to 1.

St. Louis scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning with 3
runs on 3 hits. David Freese led off and keyed the rally when he laced a
base-hit. After an out was recorded, Steven Hill came to bat and doubled.
Shane Robinson then lofted a three-run bomb making St. Louis the winners and
sending the 40,151 fans home happy. Neither team was able to score until the
6th inning.

Marc Rzepczynski(2-1) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Cliff
Lee(1-2) was hit with the loss. He struck out 12 batters in 8 and 1/3
innings despite losing the game.

'What a game!,' Rzepczynski said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't
believe it!'
